Why fabric weight is the number that matters most

Fabric weight is measured in ounces per square yard (oz/yd²) or grams per square meter (GSM). It's the single most reliable predictor of how a cotton garment will perform in heat — more reliable than the weave label, more reliable than the "cool" marketing tag.

Most brands don't publish fabric weight on product pages. The workaround: check the fabric composition percentage and look for descriptors like "lightweight," "sheer," or "gauze." If the listing says "substantial" or "structured," it's heavier. When in doubt, the hand-feel of a garment tells you immediately — if it has heft when you hold it up, it will feel warm.

Finishes and treatments — helpful or hype?

Some brands apply chemical or mechanical finishes to cotton and market them as "moisture-wicking," "cooling," or "anti-sweat." A few of these work. Most are marginal.

Mercerization is a real process — cotton is treated with sodium hydroxide under tension, which increases luster, dye uptake, and strength. It doesn't meaningfully change breathability, but mercerized cotton does feel smoother against skin, which some people find more comfortable in heat.

Moisture-wicking finishes on cotton are typically applied polymer coatings that help the fabric spread moisture across a larger surface area, speeding evaporation. They work initially. They also wash out over 15–20 wash cycles, according to research from the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC). After that, you're left with regular cotton.

Anti-microbial treatments (marketed to reduce odor) have a similar lifespan problem. Some are silver-based; others are synthetic biocides. Cotton-linen blends (typically 55% cotton / 45% linen) split the difference: more wrinkle resistance than pure linen, better breathability than pure cotton. A reasonable compromise for pieces that need to hold their shape through a long day.

The tag says "100% cotton." That tells you nothing about how it will perform in July. Here's what to look for instead.

  • Look for weave descriptors: "gauze," "voile," "lawn," "seersucker," "crinkle." These indicate open or low-weight constructions that breathe.
  • Check for "lightweight" or "sheer" in the product description. These are reasonable proxies when weight isn't listed.
  • Avoid "structured," "substantial," or "holds shape well" as descriptors for summer pieces. These signal weight and density — good for fall, not July.
  • Silhouette matters as much as fabric. A loose, breezy cut in 4oz cotton will feel cooler than a fitted dress in 3oz cotton. Air circulation around the body is part of the cooling equation.
  • Light colors reflect heat; dark colors absorb it. A white or cream cotton gauze dress in direct sun will feel meaningfully cooler than the same garment in black. This is physics, not preference.
