Cotton, linen, and Tencel are the three fabrics you'll see on every summer tag, every editorial, and every "what to pack for a hot trip" list. They're all natural or semi-natural. They all breathe. But they behave very differently on your body at 90°F — and buying the wrong one means a dress that sticks, wrinkles into a mess, or pills after six washes. How fabric breathability actually works
"Breathable" gets used loosely. What it actually describes is a combination of two things: how quickly a fabric wicks moisture away from skin, and how freely air moves through the weave. A fabric can score well on one and poorly on the other — which is why this comparison is worth doing properly.
Moisture management is about fiber chemistry. Hydrophilic fibers (linen, Tencel, cotton) absorb sweat into the fiber itself and release it through evaporation. Cotton: the familiar one

Standard cotton absorbs moisture well but releases it slowly. That's the core summer problem. Linen: the coolest feel

The result is that linen feels cool even when it's warm. Not just "breathable" in a marketing sense — genuinely cool against skin. This is why linen has been the default summer fabric in hot climates for centuries, from Mediterranean coastal towns to South Asian formal wear. The physics work.
Linen production uses 75% less water than cotton (CELC, European Confederation of Linen and Hemp). Flax grows in rain-fed conditions with minimal irrigation and no genetic modification. For a natural fiber, it's one of the lower-impact options available.
The tradeoffs are real. Linen wrinkles — not as a flaw, but as a structural property. The fiber is stiff and doesn't recover its shape the way cotton or Tencel does. A linen dress will look pressed at 9am and relaxed by noon. That's not a defect; it's the fabric. Embrace it or buy a knit. The other issue is texture: raw linen can feel scratchy against sensitive skin, especially in cheaper constructions. Tencel: the science pick
Tencel is a brand name for lyocell, a semi-synthetic fiber made from wood pulp (usually eucalyptus) processed in a closed-loop system that recaptures and reuses 99% of the solvent used in production (Lenzing AG, manufacturer of TENCEL™). It sits in an interesting category: made from a natural source, but manufactured rather than grown.
The moisture performance is genuinely impressive. Tencel absorbs moisture 50% faster than cotton (Lenzing AG technical data) and releases it back into the air quickly, keeping the fabric dry against skin. In humid heat, this is the most noticeable difference between Tencel and the other two. You sweat, the fabric wicks, you feel dry. The cycle is fast enough that you don't get the damp-fabric-against-skin problem that cotton creates.
Tencel is also the softest of the three. The fiber surface is smooth at a microscopic level, which means it drapes beautifully and feels almost silk-like against skin. This is why Tencel works well in both midi dresses and blouses — it has enough structure to hold a shape but enough drape to move well.
The wrinkle resistance is better than linen but not as good as cotton jersey. Tencel wrinkles less than linen in a suitcase, which makes it the practical choice for travel. Cotton
Machine wash warm (not hot — hot shrinks). Tumble dry medium. Iron while slightly damp if you want it pressed. Cotton tolerates heat better than linen or Tencel, but repeated hot washing does fade colors and break down elastic blends over time. Cold wash extends color life significantly.
Linen
Cold or warm machine wash (30–40°C max). Hang to dry — the dryer shortens linen's lifespan and can cause shrinkage. Iron while damp on high heat, or steam. Tencel
Cold wash only. Gentle cycle. Air dry or tumble on the lowest heat setting — high heat degrades the fiber structure and causes pilling. Tencel doesn't need ironing often, but if you do, use a cool iron with a pressing cloth. Avoid wringing or twisting when wet; the fiber is weaker when saturated.

Tags lie by omission. A garment labeled "linen" can legally contain as little as 50% linen fiber in some markets — the rest might be polyester or viscose. Here's how to read a label properly:
- 100% linen / 100% cotton / 100% lyocell — what you want for maximum breathability. Any blend with polyester reduces moisture management.
- Linen-cotton blends — a reasonable compromise. You get linen's coolness with cotton's wrinkle resistance. Look for at least 55% linen for the blend to perform like linen in heat.
- Tencel-cotton blends — common in summer dresses. Often 70% Tencel / 30% cotton. The cotton adds durability; the Tencel handles moisture. This is a good blend for everyday wear.
- Modal — often confused with Tencel. Also a wood-pulp fiber, similar performance, but a different manufacturing process. Not quite as moisture-efficient as lyocell, but close. Worth knowing if you see it on a tag.
Weight also matters. Look for fabric weights between 3.5oz and 5.5oz per square yard for summer dresses. Anything heavier traps heat regardless of fiber content. Most brands don't list weight on tags, but you can feel it — hold the fabric up to light. If it's opaque and stiff, it's too heavy for 90°F days.
Silhouette affects perceived breathability too. A loose A-line or relaxed midi in any of these three fabrics will feel cooler than a fitted silhouette in the same fabric, because air circulates between fabric and skin.
